Deeply integrated with its wealth management network, it empowers UK charities via practical, hands-on support that addresses immediate needs and fosters long-term wellbeing, with a distinctive emphasis on matching employee and adviser donations alongside relationship-driven grantmaking.

The Foundation prioritises four themes: supporting disadvantaged young people (including those from economically or socially challenged backgrounds), people with cancer, young people with special needs or disabilities, and mental health or hospice/palliative care. It funds direct service delivery—covering capital costs like equipment, revenue such as staff salaries, and project activities—with a preference for tangible, measurable interventions and multi-year commitments for sustainable impact, especially in innovative hospice care.

Eligible applicants are UK-registered charities, exempt charities, or CIOs based in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland), with small grants for organisations under £1 million annual income (reserves below 50% of income) and major grants for those between £1-7 million (occasionally up to £9 million). All applications are invite-only, requiring introduction by St. James's Place staff, advisers, or partners; from January 2026, quarterly themed windows open (first: 2-9 January for end-of-life care, cancer, financial wellbeing), with decisions post-window.

Grants typically range £2,500-£60,000 (small: up to £20,000; major: up to £60,000 annually/multi-year), excluding core funding, capacity building, or unrestricted support unless tied to direct delivery. Its unique SJP network ties, focus on small/medium charities, and UK-wide reach (with rare overseas exceptions) set it apart as a values-aligned, community-engaged funder.
