Royal Yacht Squadron Isle of Wight Foundation

The Royal Yacht Squadron Isle of Wight Foundation, established in 2015 as a registered charity by Royal Yacht Squadron members to celebrate its bicentenary, is dedicated to empowering young people aged 15-29 from the Isle of Wight by raising aspirations and unlocking career opportunities in marine and maritime sectors. Rooted in inclusivity and community reciprocity, it breaks financial barriers to foster skills, confidence, and resilience among island youth facing social or economic challenges, regardless of background. Supported solely by Squadron donations, it has awarded over £500,000 to around 300 individuals, funding pathways like marine engineering, Yachtmaster qualifications, superyacht training, boat building, and ferry operations.

It prioritises grants for training fees, essential equipment, travel, apprenticeships, internships, and certifications such as STCW, exclusively for those with strong Isle of Wight ties—typically residents, those educated or raised there. Organisations are not directly funded but can refer candidates or partner on delivery, collaborating with entities like UKSA, Trinity House, Red Funnel, and local schools.

Grants typically range from £250 to £3,000, occasionally higher based on need, excluding items covered by government schemes, student loans, or employer support—no core, unrestricted, or capital funding to charities. Unsolicited email applications to applications@rysfoundation.org.uk are accepted on a rolling basis, requiring submission at least 10 working days before quarterly Grants Panel meetings (March, June, September, December). Its distinctive hands-on approach includes personalised engagement, career mentoring, interview coaching, and long-term trustee relationships, ensuring tailored support and broad maritime career diversity for transformative local impact.
