Red Squirrel Survival Trust

The Red Squirrel Survival Trust (RSST), established in 2006 under the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales, is the UK's national charity dedicated to the long-term survival and restoration of red squirrels in their native habitats. It tackles the species' decline from invasive grey squirrels—transmitting squirrelpox and outcompeting reds—alongside habitat loss, through collaborative leadership via the UK Squirrel Accord, uniting over 40 conservation, forestry, and government partners. Beneficiaries span conservation organizations, research bodies, government agencies like the Animal and Plant Health Agency, volunteer networks, and regional initiatives in red squirrel strongholds such as South Scotland, Dorset, Cornwall, Isle of Wight, Anglesey, and Scottish Borders. UK-wide support covers England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, prioritizing landscape-scale interventions and grassroots action.

Eligible applicants are UK-registered charities, community groups, or academic institutions based in the UK, from small local volunteers to large national entities, with no income thresholds. Funding is invite-only via preliminary phone enquiries to align with strategic priorities; no unsolicited applications or public forms. The Grants Committee reviews quarterly at trustee meetings, with typical awards of £5,000–£50,000 for projects (not unrestricted or people-focused aid).
