Community Foundation in Wales

Community Foundation Wales, established in November 1998 as a registered charity and company, drives philanthropy to strengthen Welsh communities by connecting donors with grassroots projects tackling local needs. Its mission fosters active, resilient communities that address inequality through community-led action, guided by values of transparency, inclusion, empowerment, generosity, collaboration, and evidence-based impact. As a member of UK Community Foundations with deep Welsh roots, it has awarded over £40 million to more than 30,000 groups since 1999, emphasizing local expertise, sustainability, and publishing grants data via 360Giving for accountability.

It funds thematic priorities like improving life chances, building stronger communities, enhancing rural/urban environments, promoting healthier/active populations, and preserving heritage/culture. Key causes include social inclusion, poverty alleviation, mental health, youth empowerment, refugee support, and community resilience via the flagship Fund for Wales, offering unrestricted, project-based, core costs, advocacy, capacity-building, direct services, and cultural initiatives—prioritizing small, local interventions with tangible impact.

Eligible applicants are UK-registered charities, CICs, social enterprises, and community groups with incomes under £100,000, operating exclusively in Wales (all counties), especially grassroots, first-time applicants demonstrating community-level need. Grants range from £500–£2,000 per annum (up to three years, with multiyear options), applied for via an accessible online Grants Hub on a rolling basis. Monthly panel meetings occur end-of-month, with the next Fund for Wales deadline on 1st December 2025 and outcomes notified within two months. It excludes larger charities and non-Welsh projects, standing out for its Wales-only remit, encouragement of unsolicited applications, and focus on long-term social capital.
